Because of a threat to the “Unicorn of the Sea,” a carved handle of Narwhal Ivory is rarely seen. For hundreds of years the Vikings traded a nail of iron for one Narwhal tusk, took it to Europe, and sold it as the horn of the fabled Unicorn. (See page 21 of KNIVES 2009.) In this knife, Roger Bergh has reproduced the Unicorn fable in steel and Ivory, where a Virgin observing it all validates the myth that the only way to capture a Unicorn is for a Virgin to sit in a meadow and wait for it until the animal rests its head in her lap; at that moment the hunters and dogs rush in and kill the unicorn for its horn. Bergh’s forged Damascus blade mimics the swirls of the sea where the Narwhal swims. As the sea flows past, a Unicorn complete with a steel horn straddles a Narwhal, which also has a steel horn. Queen Elizabeth the First paid the equivalent of one million dollars for a Unicorn’s horn. A Unicorn is now represented on the British Coat of Arms. This Bergh knife is a truly monumental depiction of the Unicorn’s history.
Buster Warenski’s long time friend and neighbor, Jim Ence, made knives that closely compare with Buster’s. Together they scouted the hills of Utah for years looking for minerals and gemstones and each influenced the other’s knifemaking. The double-grind blade on this fighter is of perfect grind, and the sheath is either silver or German silver with a beautiful oval agate set in a engraved crown. The handle of dark brown burl Amaranth is very rich in color. Deep floral engraving on one bolster side by Ence. Tapered tang.
